Literacy

At Hartside Primary School, we use a structured, consistent approach to help every child become a confident reader and writer:

• Phonics: We follow Little Wandle to teach early reading and phonics, ensuring children build secure decoding skills from the start.
• Writing: We use Pathways to Write to develop high‑quality writing, using rich texts to teach vocabulary, grammar, and composition.
• Handwriting: We follow LetterJoin to support clear, fluent, joined handwriting across school.
• Reading: From Year 1 upwards, we use reciprocal reading strategies—clarify, question, explain, and predict/summary—to deepen comprehension and help children develop independence as readers.
