Physical Education

At Hartside Primary Academy, our intent is to deliver a high-quality, inclusive, and progressive Physical Education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physically demanding activities. Central to our approach is the development of physical literacy—the ability, confidence, and motivation to be active for life. We aim to nurture the whole child, promoting physical, social, and emotional development through carefully sequenced learning experiences that begin in the Early Years and continue through Key Stage 2.

Our curriculum ensures pupils know more and do more in PE, underpinned by the Three Pillars of Progression and aligned with National Curriculum aims. We provide two hours of timetabled PE per week, enriched by specialist coaching from partners such as Jess from Education Enterprise, ensuring staff confidence and expertise alongside pupil engagement.

We link PE learning to extra-curricular opportunities so that skills are purposeful and aspirational—for example, teaching cricket in PE before entering competitive leagues. Through adaptive teaching, tailored support, and appropriate scaffolding, every child is empowered to achieve their personal best, develop resilience, and embrace values such as respect, teamwork, and self-control.

Beyond physical competence, we prioritise healthy and active lifestyles, working in partnership with parents to support wellbeing, including mental health. Pupils have opportunities to participate in festivals, competitions, and leagues from Reception to Year 6, fostering enjoyment, confidence, and lifelong habits of physical activity.

Our intent is clear: to provide a curriculum that is inclusive, ambitious, and holistic, enabling all pupils to thrive in PE and beyond, ready for the next stage of education and life.
