News within Year 6

Year 6 hit the ground running in the first half of the autumn term, making very strong progress and producing some fabulous work. In geography, they have been learning all about different types of forests, the flora and fauna found in them, how they benefit the environment and about the threats to them. The children carried out research into the Congo rainforest and Canadian boreal forest before writing an informative text comparing the two. They also found out about what palm oil plantations are doing to the forest in Borneo, and wrote letters to companies such as Greggs, Whitbread and McDonalds demanding that they use palm oil only from sustainable sources. As part of this topic, the children also conducted a survey into the trees in our school grounds and why a lot of them are under threat.

In DT, Year 6 have designed and made their own water bottle carriers, while in PE the focus has been on athletics, with children learning different ways of running, jumping and throwing. During the autumn term the children have progressed well in their guitar lessons under the watchful eye of Mr Waite.
