News within Year 6

In the second half of the autumn term, Year 6’s focus has turned to the First World War. History lessons have focused on the experiences of the Bradford family from County Durham who sent four brothers off to fight in Belgium and France. The children have looked at primary sources such as censuses to find out about life before the war, learnt about the causes of the war, and what life was like for ordinary soldiers in the trenches. In English lessons, Year 6 have read the true story of Sydney, a boy from Burnhope who joined up at the age of 15, and the children have put themselves in Sydney’s shoes, writing letters home to his friends and family. On Armistice day, the children in Year 6, along with the rest of the school, took part in a live webinar where they found out about the war from a real life Tommy. 

In science, the children have been learning about light and have conducted experiments into how different colours absorb different amounts of light, and what happens when light is reflected. 

This term’s PE has seen the children develop their skills and understanding of handball with highly competitive matches taking place each week. Meanwhile in DT, the children demonstrated their sewing ability by cutting out and sewing together the water bottle carriers that they designed earlier in the term.
