Careers
At Hartside Primary Academy, we are committed to raising aspirations and helping every child believe that their future is full of possibility. Our careers education programme is carefully planned to be inclusive, inspiring, and progressive, supporting pupils from Early Years through to Year 6 to understand the world of work and how their learning connects to real life.
A Cumulative Approach to Careers Learning
Careers education at Hartside is not a one-off event—it is a cumulative curriculum that builds children’s knowledge, confidence, and ambition over time.
- In Early Years, careers learning is woven into our 5 to Thrive approach. Children explore the roles people play in their community through play, practical activities, and meeting “people who help us.” This nurturing foundation helps children develop curiosity, secure relationships, and a strong sense of belonging.
- As children move through school, they encounter an increasingly wide range of careers linked to their curriculum learning, helping them to see how subjects such as maths, science, literacy, and computing connect to future opportunities.
Learning from Real People, Real Careers
We strongly believe that encounters with employers and professionals bring careers learning to life. Throughout the year, our pupils benefit from visits, workshops, and assemblies led by a diverse range of visitors, including:
- Engineers, construction and STEM professionals
- Authors, mathematicians, and creative practitioners
- NHS staff and mental health professionals
- Police officers, firefighters, and public service workers
- Entrepreneurs and local business owners
These experiences allow children to ask questions, hear real career journeys—including non‑linear pathways—and understand the skills, attitudes, and values needed to succeed.
Raising Aspirations and Broadening Horizons
Our careers programme is carefully designed to challenge stereotypes and ensure children see ambitious futures as achievable. Pupils learn about:
- Universities and further education
- Skilled trades and technical careers
- Self-employment and entrepreneurship
- Public service and community roles
By meeting former pupils and local role models, children see first-hand how determination, effort, and education can open doors.
Preparing Children for the Future
Through careers education, pupils at Hartside develop:
- Confidence to talk about their interests and strengths
- Awareness of a wide range of jobs and pathways
- An understanding that learning now supports future success
- Respect for all roles within society
Our work in careers education supports personal development, PSHE, and the wider curriculum, ensuring pupils leave Hartside inspired, informed, and ready to dream big.
Working With Our Community
We are proud to work closely with families, local businesses, services, and organisations to enrich our provision. These partnerships play a vital role in helping our children explore the world beyond the classroom and imagine the many paths their futures might take.
