With school budgets tighter than ever, we realised very quickly that fundraising was going to be essential. In September 2022 we planned a range of fundraising activities including: a bedtime stories evening, a sponsored read, raffles, craft sales and stay and play coffee mornings.
In April, one of our fantastic EYFS parents, Louise Hodkinson, pledged to run the Great North Run to help with the fundraising. Whilst training, Louise ran the Gateshead 10k (with Miss Acaster – who subsequently decided running was not for her!), the Durham 10k and the Penshaw 10k before completing the GNR in September. Louise and Miss Acaster’s Go Fund Me page raised over £1,500.
In addition to this, we have successfully applied for and received grants to the sum of £1,000 each from Tesco and Believe housing. After securing the Believe housing grant, the team came to visit our garden and saw first-hand how desperate we were for change. Believe housing agreed to supply us with building contractors, BCE Northern, to complete £6,000 worth of work over the summer holidays. We had a new fence installed around the sandpit, the grass was levelled and rotavated, a new path was tarmacked, sleepers were installed next to the nursery entrance and a new fence was installed near the water feature.
In September 2023, we concluded our garden fundraising journey with the Great Hartside Run, the children ran 22 laps of the school field in support of Louise who ran the Great North Run a few days later.
