Year 2 has been zooming into focus with their moving vehicles STEM project this term. They have investigated a variety of different vehicles before undertaking the fun task of designing, making and evaluating their own vehicle. They have learnt all about wheels, axles and chassis and how they are combined to make the framework of the vehicle, as well as how to create an eye-catching body. Afterwards, the children use the crumble program to program lights for their vehicles, with some children managing to change the colour of the lights to red, yellow, blue, pink, purple etc.
In Literacy, the non-chronological report ‘Terrifying Tigers’ inspired year 2 to create a non-chronological report about cheetahs. Over the course of the lessons, the children learnt some interesting facts about cheetahs and were able to write about their habitat and how they hunt!
In our science lessons, Year 6 have been learning about evolution and inheritance. The children soon got to grips with the idea of adaptation during our ‘peppered moths investigation’. Learning about how the dirt and soot of industrial Britain altered the habitat of the moths, therefore leading to adaptations in the colour of the moths over time, the children timed themselves to see how many moths they could catch. Following on from this, the children used their understanding of how species adapt to suit their environment to design their own creature for a particular habitat. In maths the children have been learning algebra. They all showed amazing grit, while giving it a go, and agreed that it maybe wasn’t as tricky as they were expecting!
Year 6 enjoyed a brilliant day over to Nissan in Sunderland. We completed lots of activities and challenges during the day, which all required self control and grit. The children had great fun creating their own car production lines, all with a job role and part to play, when they built up lego cars.
